Hey everyone!
I used to be active on here a couple of years ago when I was raising my very first flock at 13 years old - assorted English orpingtons. We had them for about a year but decided to rehome them when winter came and we discovered that our handmade coop was drafty and failed to keep them warm and happy. My formerly sweet rooster also suddenly became aggressive, and it broke my heart but it was too much trouble for me to care for them all with school starting again and an insufficient set-up, and a difficult rooster on top of that all.
They went to a farm in our neighborhood with more space where Blue could have literally 100 more hens all to himself and we hoped that would help his behavior. His new owner valued eggs and I valued pets that I could have friendly interactions with, so she didn’t mind taking him.
My dad and I spent the past summer building a larger, more secure coop and now we are doing this all again with new chicks! A few weeks ago I got a mixed flock of 3 speckled Sussex, 3 Easter eggers, and 2 buff orpingtons, all of which were supposed to be pullets but I am fairly certain that one of the SS is a cockerel. I planned for only 6 because of the limited space that we have but I got a little bit ahead of myself. We’ll see how they fit considering EE’s are much smaller than EOs, and I have the option to periodically free range if I need to.
I‘m super excited to be doing this again!! I’m going through a rough time right now and spending time with the babies is already helping me. I already have a bunch of questions and I’m very glad that I discovered this site so long ago, it was helpful last time and I know it will be again this time around.
