Yea we definitely will be watchful with the roosters & the kids. I have my own childhood memories of being trapped in our chicken run by my rooster who wanted to flop me! haha I remember escaping & throwing my flipflops at him to try to make my getaway! LolGlad to meet you, and welcome to BYC, where we do, indeed, spend a lot of time discussing our own and each others' birds! We love photos and stories a lot. I really like that you are making a family project. The kids will always remember their experiences.
I presume that you know to keep your toddlers/preschoolers away from any roosters that result from your hatch. They are small enough and active enough that roosters can misread them and attack them as a danger to the rooster's ladies. And roosters can do serious damage, mental as well as physical to small people. They are just doing their rooster duty, and it's up to us to prevent tragedies by keeping small people away from the roosters' territory.
Done with public service announcement.
How fun to choose breeds! There are always more that I can think of, and would love to add. It's called chicken math, and it's a real thing. Many folks here routinely advise new members to build bigger coops and runs than they currently need, with chicken math in mind! We joke about it, and you'll see some folks noting Chicken Addict, or Victim of Chicken Math in their avatar listing. We will wait anxiously to hear what breeds you start with, and any additions you make over time!
& I definitely understand the chicken math being a real thing! It happens so fast too! My family jokes that I'm on the verge of being a crazy chicken lady
