Hi Everyone!
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I am new to chickens this year. My husband and I bought and older home with some land last year with hopes of starting our own little farm. We decided to start with chickens so here we are. I never expected to love the little things so much lol. We got our first chickens in the middle of April.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
We currently have 20 chickens with intent to collect eggs.
(3) What breeds do you have?
Our first batch was 3 Rhode Island Reds and 3 Black Australorps. I then ran across Lavendar Wyandottes and I got 2 of those. A week later I got 2 Polish Crested.
Our next group are about 3-4 weeks old and there are 2 Barred Plymouth Rock, 2 Silver Laced Wyandotte, 4 Easter Eggers, 2 Light Brahma.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
I could sit and watch these chickens all day. The hobby aspect of it has been fun to dive into. Researching the different breeds and especially the ones I own has been fun. My Son loves to help me care for them. He is 3 and scares them all the time but for some reason they flock to him when he is around.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I enjoy spending time outdoors, deer hunting, dirt racing, and just spending time with my family.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
Me, my husband, and our son live in southeast Indiana on 20 acres. We have two dogs, a 13 year old basset named Scotch and a 9 year old Whippet mix named Rue. I am a Journeyman Drafter for my day job and hope to continue to expand our little farm.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I joined initially to get opinions on the sex of my two Polish but have been browsing all sorts of information.
