Hi from Ogden, Utah. I've had chickens for 4 years now... and I still learn new things all the time from others. I have 10 chickens right now. 6 Rhode Island reds and 4 barred rock chickens. My sweet girls love being pet and held and my barred rock girls get jealous if you pet only one of them. They ALL want some love. I initially got chickens to get over my fear of birds... long story. ID SAY IT WORKED. lol. Thanks for letting me join this group!

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow

So glad you are enjoying your flock, chickens really do love to be loved, very affectionate creatures! Lots of people have a fear of birds, but chickens are guaranteed to make that dissolve.

Make yourself at home here and welcome to our community!

Welcome to BackYard Chickens! We're happy to have you here! It sounds like you have a very friendly flock. I'm glad that they were able to help you get over your fear of birds. They're definitely the ones to do it. 🥰

If you don't mind me asking, have you ever seen the horror movie, The Birds? I've come across several people who are scared of birds. (Often they come up to me because they're surprised to see someone with a chicken in public, especially if they're on a leash, riding on my lap in the car, or even doing tricks at a public event.) Whenever one of these people tells me that they're scared of birds, I ask them two questions. One, if they didn't tell me right away, is why are they scared of birds? When they say they're scared of their feet and beaks, I ask them if they've seen the movie, The Birds. Oftentimes, I find that they had, and that's why they're scared of birds. I often proceed to hold the chicken's feet and sometimes cover their face so the person can pet the chicken's feathers if they are willing. It's often quite rewarding to see their reactions and amazement of actually "petting a chicken."

Hello and welcome!
Just curious ...Did you watch Alfred Hitchcock's movie "birds" when you were a small child??
One of my daughters got slightly traumatized from that movie...
I will never forget it. It did scare the bejesus out of me. But, I've since had numerous birds, including parakeets, parrots, lovebirds, finches, chickens, and I love the wild birds. But you know your FebDeb is old lol.
