I just joined around 3:00am Central Standard Time. I had been searching the internet on what to name my future egg business, and how to stop my stupid Brahmas from pecking the rest of their coop mates. While I am still searching for those answers, my hopes are still high.
1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
We got our first chickens last year when my son randomly came home with them. We got more this year, after looking at different eggs shell colors. We made a “wish list”, of what we would like. Somehow we unexpectedly ended up with the entire list.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
We got 13 last year, and 30 more this year. My husband kept buying 4 of each instead of 2, and here we are.
(3) What breeds do you have?
Polish, Brahma, Orpington, Maran, Welsummer, Olive/Easter/Starlight Green/Prairie Bluebell Egger, Americana, Bielefelder (and 2 bronze turkeys…ugh)
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
One of my favorite aspects is seeing the different eggs in the morning (at noon..at night). I can’t wait for the new ones to start laying a rainbow of eggs. Yes, yes, yes, they will all taste the same; but they will LOOK cool.
I also enjoy teaching my granddaughter about them. She is only 15 months, but already looks forward to seeing her “bawk bawks” every morning.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
My biggest hobby is sewing. When my children were in school, I worked on show choir and Madrigal costumes. Now I quilt. My group proudly makes Quilts of Valor as well as quilts for our local hotel. Currently I am making quilts for my oldest child’s second baby and my 2nd child’s first.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I have 5 kids. 4 live within a 30 minute drive, and the 5th is a 3 hour plane ride. When they visit, it’s mass chaos and I love it. We live on acreage in central Iowa. Our kids are pushing for a cow or goat, but who do they think will take care of that thing????
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community
Every time I search for chicken help, I end up on this site, so I joined.
Phew….. I am done. If you have made it this far, thank you for reading.
