Hello! I am ButternutSquashi. I'm here to join this awesome community and learn more about chickens.
  • Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
    • I'm pretty darn new to chickens. We had chickens for a few years when I was a kid, but I never took care of them besides collecting eggs. I got my first personal chickens the first week of March 2024.
  • How many chickens do you have right now?
    • I have 8 chickens.
  • What breeds do you have?
    • I have 2 Sapphire Gems, 2 Plymouth Barred Rocks, 3 Crested Cream Legbars, and 1 Lavender Orpington.
  • What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
    • I love watching my birds grow up. They're such sweethearts. My absolute favorite thing they do would be when they drink water and tip their head back like the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park.
  • What are some of your other hobbies?
    • I enjoy baking and gardening. Sewing is another thing I enjoy, although I'm not great at it.
  • Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
    • I live with my guardians in a good sized city. Before we moved to the city, we lived deep in the country side in the PNW. My guardians are from Montana and have extensive experience with all sorts of farm animals. We also have a toy poodle and I previously owned Leopard geckos. There is a wolf spider and a triangulate cobweb spider who lives in our shed named Jimothy and Timona respectively.

  • Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
    • I found BYC while researching about chickens before I got mine. It kept slipping my mind, but I have finally joined the community after the community giving me so many much needed answers.

Nice intro! Sounds like a beautiful flock -- some really great breeds -- and I enjoyed your nod to Jurassic dinosaurs :)

It's great that you can have chickens while living in a city. After moving from the countryside, I bet it's nice to have at least a bit of the natural world still with you.

BTW, if you enjoy sewing, you'll keep at it, and one day, you might just find that with all the practice, you've gotten pretty good.

It's good to meet you; welcome to BYC to you and your birds!
