(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
My family had chickens when I was little, I had chickens in my teens and early twenties up in a snowy area and now I've got this new flock with my own kiddos. They are quite smitten and very excited.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Currently 8 but I'm pretty sure we have a few cockerals in the mix. Hopefully not too many!
(3) What breeds do you have?
Original group raised from day old Christmas hatching chicks
1 Buff Orpington Pullet 7 wo
2 BO x Easter Egger Cockerals (?) 7 wo
Additions added 3 weeks ago:
1 Buff Sussex Pullet 4 mo
1 Speckled Sussex Pullet (?) 4mo
1 Wyandotte Pullet 3mo?
1 Grey Mystery Pullet 3mo?
1 Black Mystery Cockeral (?) 3mo?
I'll upload photos eventually as I want to know your thoughts, especially on mystery bird potential breed
Apparently all the new additions are heritage birds. Some easier to identify then others!
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Their chattering, their personalities, fluffy butts and definitely their eggs.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Gardening, cooking, twitching and adventures with my family just now, keeping it simple
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets
We have a beautiful Old English Sheepdog who is a great guardian to anything he sees as "his" flock. We've had guinea pigs, parrots and fish. Kids have adopted some massive blue tongues in the backyard they leave strawberry offerings for. They have tough competition with the chooks now though!
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
Great go to source for information, friendly helpful community. Finally joined to learn more and hopefully some of that chicken wisdom will rub off on us. Thanks for having me here.
