I'm a pet-sitter who has been watching other people's flocks for a decade, but last August
I adopted a rescue chicken who had a non-healing toe wound and was going to be
dispatched by her owners. She had to be kept separate from other chickens while healing
so we built her a little pen near my landlord's flock for the daytime, and she has slept in a converted cat carrier
in my shower since then. Her name is Sky, she's a Cream Leg Bar, and I fell absolutely
in love with her while nursing her back to health. I promised her that if she healed I would
get her an excellent coop and a small family-flock of her own. She moved into her new
coop last weekend, and I am in the process of looking for 3 excellent pullets to join
her crew. I'm new and not really new to this whole thing but I am SO excited to have my
own chickens. I'm happy to be here because I aim to take the best possible care of them
and I know the collective wisdom of this space will be invaluable to my efforts.
