Hello

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.

I can have chickens where I live. Ignore the ordinances at the risk of losing your flock. Have you considered working to change them instead of violating them?
No, I have not. A lot of people in my area have been working on them, and I might join up with them before I get back in. I was just wondering what other people have done.

I encourage you to join them and work toward getting as many others to do the same. The stronger the push for change from the largest number of people (aka - taxpayers), the higher the chance of success.

Try to find passed ordinances in nearby communities and formulate and present a similar structure to your community. Try to provide assurances that the neighbors will be respected and address potential fears of negative consequences with solutions before they can be brought up. Like the concern about odor. You could propose that all coop/run setups must provide a minimum of 15 sq ft per bird of combined area between the coop and run and it must be under a solid roof on high ground to keep everything dry to prevent overcrowding and odor build up. Chicken poop STINKS when wet. And it keeps the environment healthier if everything is dry as parasites and bacteria prefer things damp. Propose a limit on the number of hens and no roosters.
