Hi all. Just joined and wanted to follow the rules and introduce myself. I've been aware of BYC for a long time but never had the need to join before now.
I grew up on a farm so chickens and various other critters are not new to me, but it's been a while since I had a flock. Picked up some hatching eggs at the end of January and here are the results (plus a few fill ins from TSC). We are trying to be as self sufficient as possible so it's great to be able to produce our own eggs very soon. One of the hens actually already left me a random egg in the run. I guess they're still figuring things out. We have a surplus of roos, so I'll have to deal with that. It's not unexpected, but I just haven't decided who to keep yet. At least it's well less than half. There is one girl not in the picture. She's sweet and gentle and ended up the victim of some bullying. She's on the mend and I'm hoping I can reintroduce her once there's only one roo in the mix.
We wanted ducks too, but being in west TX where it's so hot and dry that just didn't seem fair. We have a colony of bunnies though along with our cat and dogs and a bunch of guinea pigs that we raise for show. We are transplants from a colder, wetter climate so the wildlife here is a big change. I'm hoping the rattlesnakes are not inclined to bother the chickens.
Anyway, that's us. Chicken tax below.
