Hello let me tell you about K&H Chicken Farm. It was started in Feb 16 2008 with 3 laying Black Australorps 2 younger hens of unknown breeds, 4 chicks also unknown , a small Bantam hen that lays and one rooster. (Chicken Joe). Today we have grown to all that has been listed plus four eggs. (LOL)
It is owned by a brother (age 11) and sister(age 7) team and the farm manager is mom Shelly. We are looking at this as a great way to teach the young owners about responsibility, keeping records, saving money and where there food comes from. (Please do not worry this is not a case of parents buying kids chickens and then expecting them to care for them 100% with out help. It is a family project and we all helping out)
There chicken run is 25’ x 100’ with a large covered 3 sided shed (for now) at one end. We are looking at plans to build a better hen house right now. Money is tight and we are doing everything on a budget so any money saving tips are great and welcomed. We spent $55 yesterday just on the hens and where given the rooster. Today we where given 5 more roosters so the kids can try to sell them at the small animal swap meet next Saturday so they can get a couple more hens. (Most likely we will have 5 extra roosters to feed!)
Any ways that is who we are. We also have 3 dogs,6 cats, 5 parrots, 3 teils, 5 budgies 2 fish tanks, 2 rats and a Bear.(Husband and Dad.)

hi' and welcome. your family project sounds great. if they can't trade them roosters make good barbecue.

Welcome - our chickens are also a family fun project. Our children love to be involved - especially collecting eggs and playing with the hens.

Good luck selling the Roos. Your kids are getting great hands on experience and that is priceless.

LOL Thats Ok they have 2 more pens that size and one that is 150' x 30 that can be split with gates into 3. All with 8' chain link fence. Life is good for chickens on a old Emu ranch.

Welcome to the group....You'll find a really great source of community and information here, PLUS lots of 'enablers' when you decide that the chickens you have aren't enough!

Did we mention how much fun HATCHING eggs can be?? HMM???

Oh, and take any posts by Purple Chicken with a completely warped sense of humor and you'll not get too wigged out....he's only kidding (most of the time )
