We are new chicken owners we have 2 golden wyndottes and 3 rhode island reds. we got them 4/27/11 and they are still living in the brooder in our main bathroom. we are busy designing the coop and run. we live in the brighton, Colorado area and we were wondering how important is it that we insulate the coop? we plan on wiring for a heat lamp. Thanks.

My coop isn't insulated, but it's draft free and dry. Insulation would be safer than a heat lamp though.

Welcome to BYC! You have come to the coolest place on the internet for chicken knowledge.

I started with chickens last summer and the people of BYC have been great. This year I have tried hatching and buying chicks for even more chickeny joy. Please visit my BYC Page for my blog links that you may find informative or amusing.

Don't insulate. Keep the chickens dry and draft free. Good ventilation (no draft on the birds) is key.

See patandchickens for details, link on my Weather Outside is Frightful blog post.
