Hi!
My dad and I are looking at getting some chicks in March. We have a coop that was dropped off at our house and want to fill it! We don't know too much about raising chickens, but have been doing some reading on the web. Is there anything super important we should know about the new additions to our family?

Get the biggest and most predator proof coop you can afford.

! Pleased you joined us! Yes, there are some things you should know before you take the plunge. I'll also include some links for your learning pleasure. If the coop that was dropped off is used, one thing I think you should do is clean and disinfect and debug the the coop - don't want to get your new birds sick if the ones that resided there before had diseases. Also, make your run predator proof (look up hardware cloth). Best of luck to you!

Here is the Learning Center - a great place for general knowledge about chicken keeping:

Here is a baby chicks link (if you are getting baby chicks)

Here's a link for taking care of older birds:

Decide on what age of chickens that you want to start with, chicks, point of lay pullets or hens. Once you know where you want to start, decide how many. Read articles from the Learning Center on this site. And then just do it. Best decision I ever made was to get chickens.
