Hello, I wanted to introduce myself. A year ago we started with chickens in the backyard after years of begging from my husband. I really wasn't into the idea at all.......but NOW I LOVE chickens. We have a Sliver Laced Wyondotte, Black Sex Link and a Production Red. We had a Rhode Island Red but we lost her to a hawk a few months ago. It was a hard loss for us because they are beloved family members. We just picked up four rainbow layer chicks and can't wait to see how they turn out!

do you have a fenced run area for them? If you could put a top on- even just deer fencing it would repel hawks. If they are out in the open they need hiding spots, thick brush, etc so they can hide somewhere till the threat is gone.

We are in the process of building a run with a closed top. They were free ranging and had plenty of places to hide but we don't want to take a chance. We are in the middle of town and had never seen hawks this far in city limits so we figured they were safe. She was to big for it to carry off so the hawks were back the next day and were not to happy to find their meal gone.
