Hi! We were given a flock of three laying hens last year to babysit, and the owner decided never to get them back ;) I live in a residential area that has not approved backyard chickens yet, so hopefully that gets passed. I have a buff orpington, plymouth rock, and I think an australorp. They are a lot of fun and have amazing egg output. We are expanding soon so hope that goes well!!

Welcome!! Aren't you lucky to be "thrown" into keeping chickens. I sometimes think that is better than trying to plan it all out, because there is always something you are waiting for before you jump in. Have great luck with your chickies and I would like to know when you expand what you are getting! Have fun!

Yes, we wanted to try having chickens....and this way, if we got reported or told it wasn't allowed, we could just give them back to the owner. Luckily that never happened :) They have their own giant fenced yard (we are on a corner lot, so two fenced yards with a small run behind the pool area) so there is still a chicken free playground side for the kids and dog. We are still figuring a lot out, like how to get my garden back up and running since they decimated it (thinking of just screening in the planter beds) and we are building a new, larger coop....we are still scared that something is just going to swoop in and eat them, too!! Does everyone really go out and close them up securely daily?? But I digress. We plan to add a speckled Sussex and an Ameraucana....and a duckling temporarily (we live next door to a pond, so he will go there eventually).
