Hi I live in Kent in South East England. I am the daughter of a chicken farmer and went to Harper Adams Agricultural College and studied poultry.

I keep chickens as a hobby, I also keep bees and live and work on a vineyard on a Country Estate with my English Springer Spaniel and Labrador.

I currently have 9 egg laying hybrids, 1 Crested Cream Legbar Cockerel, a black, a Mottled, and a Lavender Splash Orpington, a Lemon Pyle Braham, a Speckled Sussex, 8 cross Cream Legbar/ hybrid chicks who hatched in the snow on 23rd February this year AND my newest chickens 5 LF White silkies who are adorable but I haven't got a clue how to tell the sex! They are 11 weeks old.

I googled how to tell the sex of silkies and found this wonderful site. Its fantastic to read about all the other chicken lovers out there.

I am hoping to post some pictures of my silkies to see if anyone can help me to tell their sex and to read the articles and advice of fellow chicken lovers also if I can help anyone with my experiences that would be great.

I LOVE CHICKENS :)

Silkies are very hard to sex - most breeders need 4-5 mos. to figure it out. Sometimes the comb will give them away - the wider combs could be males, and the narrow combs pullets but, I wouldn't gamble any money on it.

I didn't know the legbars could be crested. Neat.

My Cream Legbar is crested and he has passed the crest on to most of his chicks, I hope he passes on the blue egg laying gene too. Cany wait to see what colour eggs his daughters lay.
