Here in Florida with one Buff Orpington and what we think are either Araucanas or Ameraucanas... Not so sure. I'm curious about the pecking order and something I heard about it recently. We have an ordinance in our county that stops us from having any males. We only have females, or so we hope... They are about 6 weeks old and we noticed that one of them seems more aggressive and dominant. The Buff is bigger and fluffier, but her demeanor is very cool and collected. The others are a bit more active. Anyways, glad to join the BYC and hope everyone is having a great Saturday. :)

My question is does one hen take a dominant role if all of them are hens?

The answer is usually yes. They will never be as dominant as a roo. However, one hen usually steps up and becomes the "leader". For me its my RIR. She is top of the heap and chases off the neighbors chickens when they wander into her territory.
