Hi guys! My name is Elizabeth :) I'm so excited to have found this site! I'm getting chickens for the first time this spring! I've always wanted chickens so I can't wait to start. I am new to this so I would greatly appreciate any helpful information I can get. I'll be getting Rhode Island Reds as I want a chicken that can produce a decent amount of brown eggs :). I can't wait to hear from you all!

Hi and :welcome

That's great that you're getting chickens. Best of luck! We've found chickens an interesting and productive hobby to have on the side - homegrown eggs are much better than anything we've eaten before. :P
You can have a look around the learning centre which has some helpful info (https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center) or post any specific questions you have. Chickens are pretty hardy creatures, as long as they have the food, water and shelter they need, they can take care of themselves when it comes to a lot of things!

Have fun, and enjoy the site :D

Definitely check out the learning center here on BYC. Lots of good reads on all the aspects of poultry keeping. Well it is great to have you aboard! Enjoy your new adventure!

You can start be joining your state thread and see what others are saying /doing. Very likely some chickeners may live near you. Go to "where am I, where are you," in the social forum to find and post on your state thread.

Ooh, Diva - "chickeners'! I like that way better than "that old lady on the corner who decided to buy some chickens." Welcome, Elizabeth!

Welcome Elizabeth! Glad to have you on BYC. RIR will certainly give you more than a decent amount of brown eggs. Hens can lay just about everyday, and usually lay upwards of 250 eggs per year. They are one of the best heritage laying breeds around. Only sex-links (derived from RIR) can outpace them in productivity, and that isn't by much! They are hardy chickens also. Definitely a great bird to own. Best of luck.
