Cornwall in the UK
I'm a new member and very new to chickens
My husband came home from our local agricultural market with six black maran five day old chicks!
I live in the UK right at the bottom on the sticky out bit in sunny Cornwall
Its a beautiful area we retired here two years ago from up north in Yorkshire
I'm 51! Ouch have grown up four children and I have had the very misunderstood condition ME for eight yrs, my health varies from bed bound and pretty poorly to up about 8 hrs a day, not in one go, some mobility lots of pain!
So caring for the chicks isn't easy in fact just cleaning the cage daily is all I can manage physically in a day,
I'm AMAZED that in the USA you can get chick by post??? This just can't be true? What about animal welfare? Surely its cruel?
I've got a lot to learn about chickens and I'm looking forward to learning it here

Welcome to BYC!

Sorry you have such health issues. I hope your new flock brings you great joy.

Yes, our chicks are shipped via the post office! Usually things go well and the chicks get to their destination in good condition. I little shook up, but not too bad. However sometimes they do get lost or end up dying on the road. The Post Office has been shipping chicks for many many many decades now. Recently they were going to stop shipping chicks. I am not sure what happened with this decision to continue.

This is the place to be for all the learning! So pull up a roost bar and make yourself at home. Welcome to our flock!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Congratulations on your new flock, you should have some nice dark brown eggs!
Hope your health improves this year, and the chicks bring you some entertainment. X2 A lot of day old chicks are shipped by the postal service over here and have been for years, since the chicks are still living off their yolk sack for up to three days or so, it usually works out fine.

Hey, Pinkaboo, welcome to our community. We're glad to have you here. This will be a place that you can come to on your 'bad' days.

Ha you,ll get sick of me sourland! Luckily there is the most fab ME forum called foggy friends
To off load all the bad health days
I've found the chick therapeutic in some ways
In others like cleaning the cage its hard work and I can suffer after it
But just watching then and feeling them relax and fall asleep in my hand is priceless
Especially as I'm very nervous of birds

Very sorry to hear of your health problem - I don't know what ME is? Do you have someone to help you when you are especially feeling unwell? Happy you joined the flock.
