I am new to byc and chickens in general. I have been reading the good advice on this website for a while now and thought I'd join. I have a silkie rooster and four chicks: two bantam mille fleur cochins, one silkie, and one araucona or Americana (not sure). We hatched the chicks in biology class, and I was able to bring them home because my silkie girls got eaten

Welcome to BYC! Do you have a picture of your Araucana/Ameraucana? Most likely, it is not either breed, but an Easter Egger, which are hybrids produced by crossing Araucanas or Ameraucanas (both blue egg laying breeds) with other breeds to produce hens that lay eggs in different colors (blue, green, sometimes even pink or gold). Good luck with your flock.

So sorry for your losses. I hope your heavy heart can heal soon.

Definitely follow the link that Kelsie has provided and ask questions if you need to on making your coop and run secure.

Enjoy this new journey you are on and welcome to our flock!

Thanks everyone! Here are pictures of "Gerald":

Please beef up security, so you don't "lose" the new chicks. Silkies are especially are prone to predator attacks because their vision is obscured by crest & beards. If you don't intend to show,
you can improve their chances by cutting back feathers around eyes and face . THen again their silkie feathers don't make good wing coverings so they aren't good fliers, they' re more jumpers.

They really need a secure run with covered top - free ranging they are probably first choice of all predators.

I am, we just got new fencing to goon the top of the run, so that will help a lot. Thanks for everyone's help!
