HeIlo I have a few questions well first off we have 12 chickens we have 2 white leg horns 4 black austrolops and 6 road Islas reds we got them in march around secon week and today we foun our first egg we did not know who laid it but we are not hatching them and when my husband opend the egg it looked a little red in side but also a lot of yellow my hubby thinks it's just a very rich egg cause they are fresh . Now I was wondering why and if I should switch there door to layer food they are on finish grower and tey also free rang . I was gonna use the purine omega 3 kind also can I give them scratch grain yet or at all ? Thank you and sorry for all the questions

Yay for the first egg!!! I believe sometimes the first laid eggs from a new layer, "pullet eggs" can be a bit wonky and it may take a few to straighten out. The yolks will probably be much yellower or even orange-y than most store bought eggs. Shouldn't really be red in them. That may be pullet egg problems. Or do you have a rooster? I'm unfamiliar with fertilized eggs. Most will tell you just to finish the bag of finish/grower and set out oyster shell and those that need it will use it to up their calcium. I'm sure they could have scratch grains now, just remember they are a treat. Make sure they have access to grit...oh wait they free-range, duh! HTH, Carrie
