I am new...really new to raising chickens. Never had any before. A raccoon got ahold of my white leghorns. But my hubby wants chickens so we have since purchased 3 red speckled Sussex and 4 baby red leghorns. Hopefully the are all hens. I still want to find some white leghorns. Anyway have been using this site for awhile for information so decided to sign up. It has very useful information for new people like me.

Sorry to hear about your loss! Have a browse through the Learning Centre: https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center There are some articles on predator protection, including one on raccoons. Enjoy the site!

So sorry for your losses. Make sure your coop and run are build like Fort Knox. Definitely stop by our learning center. Sumi has left you with the link.

Great to have you aboard and welcome to our flock!

Welcome to BYC! Sorry about the loss of your White Leghorns to the raccoon. The other BYC members have given you some good links on dealing with predators, including raccoons. You shouldn't have any problems finding some more White Leghorns as it is a readily available breed. Good luck with your flock.

BYC has a very useful learning center

BYC also has a very nice Trend on Coops check the top of the page as a tight coop and run makes a big difference in keeping a healthy and safe flock

This is our predator around here and I caught 2 dozen last year
before the damage stopped ....

Yes they will rip up a wire fence so chicken wire is only to keep
chickens in and not much out ......

BYC also has a Predator Trend and you can find a lot of Trends by typing your desires in the Search box at the top of the page so a lot of people have written about their problems and how they fixed the problem and if you ask you will get an answer ...

PLEASE beef up your coop/run security before getting more birds. Otherwise you will continually be replacing lost birds - very sad

. Once predators get an easy meal they will keep coming back and bring relatives and friends.
