Hi there,
I've been watching this site for a long time reading posts etc, but 3 wks ago we started incubating eggs from our own hens that are just coming up to 1 yr old. We put 8 eggs in, 5 were duds so we got rid of those, but 2 hatched, one yesterday 8:30am, the other the previous evening at 8:30pm, so we have one a day & a half old, the other 1 day old. the third egg is still in the incubator & definitely has something in it, weather dead or alive at this stage I don't know. We are waiting till tomorrow which will be day 25, then we'll have to rethink what to do : candle, tapping, maybe assisting.
We've had chicks before but they were always raised by our Black maran as she was always broody, but she's gone now so we decided to give it a go ourselves, this is our first time incubating so any tips are more than welcome.
Here's a couple of pics of our 2 new additions, they are from a Welsummer cockerel & Amber white hen
the first one was the first to hatch:

yes, I did try candling, there's definitely something in it, there's a solid dark shadow apart from the air pocket, but no signs even of internal pipping

thank you every one for the warm welcome & good wishes for my remaining egg.

I thought I'd give a bit more insight into me:
I'm a really old lady ( just turned 50) lol!
