Hi there! I'm a brand new chick raiser and so excited about it. My family got 3 one-week old chicks last night and are already having a great time. We have a Buff Brahma, Gold Star, and Black Australorp. I've included their adorable pictures here. No names yet - soon! We are also planning on adding another 3-5 to the brooder this weekend. Waiting on a few more breeds to hatch and become available.

I'm so excited to become part of this community!

We are planning on adding 3-5 more babies this weekend and are hoping to get some of these breeds. We're looking for friendly temperament with kiddos and decent laying (and I want beautiful birds, but my husband doesn't care about that) hee hee. Oh, and we also are hoping for them to be winter-hardy since we live in Colorado. Any thoughts on this list?

- Cochin (I love the fluffy feet!)
- Araucana
- Leghorn
- Wyandotte
- Buff Orpington

Other ones I particularly like are:
- Dorking (hard to find??)
- Polish (those hair-dos!!)

- And of course I want a Silkie

I would love any input from seasoned chicken experts!!! (I have read all of the reviews - just looking for any additional thoughts)

Glad you could join the flock! You have some lovely chicks there!! I would just say as a polish keeper my self that they some times don't do well in a mixed flock, silkies too. As they are a more fancy breed with the crests they tend to get more attention from other members because of the crests. Feather pecking and bullying can soon escalate. Regular checking of the crest and eyes is also important, mites and other parasites like to make homes in them! Other than that they are a super breeds and very friendly.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Adorable chicks! X2, Polish and Silkies can be a problem in a mixed flock and often need to be kept separate. Cochins are nice birds and make good pets, but they often tend to be very broody which cuts down on their egg production (if you were looking at the Silkie as a broody, Cochins would be a good alternative though.) The Leghorn will have a very large comb, and they are prone to frostbite.
