I'm new and just beginning. I have 3 chicks - 2 are Australorps and one is an Orpington. I'm BRAND new at this but all my chicken keeping friends talk about their "girls" and I am wanting the same! I'm also wanting those fresh eggs. My 3 are just 2 weeks old right now, and they are in a big box with a warming light in the back bedroom. My dogs are 'guarding' outside the door which is very sweet :-)

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided join our flock. Australorps and Orpingtons are wondeful breeds; hardy, calm and gentle (my children and granddaughter made lap pets of both breeds), and good layers of large, brown eggs (the Australorps are expecially excellent layers). Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your Australorps and Orpington.

Please keep an eye on the dogs, generally dogs regard chickens as squeaky toys. They grab and play with them till the squeaking stops (dead) and grab another one. New members seem to report a lot of pet dog massacres of their own birds. Even breeds like yorkies, doxies, Chihuahuas are into the carnage. Welcome to Backyard chickens,
Glad you joined the flock.

I'm glad you joined our community!

Good luck with your chicks! Orpingtons and Australorps are great breeds to start out with, since they're hardy, docile, and very productive egg layers.
