I don't know about apples but some people hang a head of cabbage just high enough so the birds have to jump at it and get more exercise. There are also bird balls (out of seeds) but they are kinda pricey., a cabbage is not.

I will be sure to update when the results come in. I ended up working really late tonight and didn't get to put them up. I will tomorrow, though.
 
I am happy to report that there have been zero signs of bullying since I separated the Cornish hens from the laying hens. To top it off, all the injuries on the Cornish are healing nicely and they seem to be very happy in their new home (maybe because I give them so many extra treats haha).
