New to raising chickens. I have 3 Rhode Island reds and 2 black sex links. They are 3 weeks old. We lost one 2 weeks ago, she wasn't eating or drinking. The rest are healthy and getting big. Trying to figure out the best way to manage litter.

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

Sounds like you have a lovely flock! Sorry to hear of the two you lost

Sometimes that just happens. I'm glad to hear the others are getting along well. Good luck wih them. What kind of bedding are you using? Chicks can definitely be messy. If you have some questions, feel free to ask.

Good luck with your new chicken adventure and welcome to our flock.

Using pine wood shavings. I have them in a little coop/small animal hutch for now. The floor of the coop is wire and below is ametal tray at the bottom. How high do I stack the litter? The shavings are small enough that they totally fall through the wire.

Try putting some newspaper or cardboard on the wire and then putting the shavings on top. And it shouldn't be that high. Maybe 1-2 inches.

That design is to not use bedding at all. Just let the poop fall through the wire onto the tray. Makes cleaning a snap.
I see what your saying now and I agree with Percheron chick. With wire brooders, you shouldn't use bedding since it will just fall through.

Thanks everyone. I will put a little bedding in the catch pan to make cleaning easy and also add a little area of newspaper with bedding for a soft area. They have a hard area in the nest box ready but will get a dowel this week to add a perch too.
