Females under the age of one year are considered pullets, even when laying, and once they reach one year then they are considered hens. :)
Now Tookie while in the Coop buying feed a while back a local farmer told me about the other definition of Hen. He said, "A pullet is a hen when she loses her first foot race with a rooster". I think most of my pullets that are laying fertile eggs have lost a foot race some time ago. One day I call them pullets and the next day hens. I forget. Some will soon be that magical year old anyway.
