Hello to all,
My name is Carla, I live in mid-Missouri and am going to keep chickens for eggs this next year. I have a couple questions, but that is probably just the begining. I'm new to the idea of keeping chickens, have several different books and plan on visiting my neighbors to check out their set up. I am in the process of choosing my coop set up and already have a question. The gentleman building my coop doesn't like the outside access to the nesting boxes, say they almost always leak. Anyone with this problem? Also please, why are some coops off the ground as compared to the ones flush with the ground. Thank you, Carla

I don't know about the outside access to the nests. Seems like it could be overcome.

Off the ground is sometimes to give a covered area in the run.

welcome! As for the coop questions, take the time to access the Coop 101 page or read other posts regarding construction & design -- you may find your answers there. There are many, MANY different designs, and lots of creative ideas out there! Again, welcome, neighbor to the west!

Hello and welcome to BYC. I am also new. I live in northern CA. about 45 miles north of San Francisco. I have outside nesting boxes. We weather stripped them and have no problem with them leaking. We also built them with the tops at an angle so the rain runs off. Also my coop is up off the ground as well. It helps keep predators out and if it happens to flood the coop wont get wet inside. The chickens also like hanging out under the coop for shade.

from conneticut! to answer your questions about building a coop above or on ground,,, well could possibly be a personal decision? ours (if you look at my byc page) appears to be built on the ground however it sits on 5 cement heavy blocks. I think if a coop sits directly on the ground its a possiblity the wood will rot quicker. If you like the look of a coop on stilts that works too. on byc home page there is a vast selection of coop pictures!!!
