Hi just joined up today after referring to BYC for months, new to the whole chicken thing made the mistake of mentioning to the wife that I thought having cx would be fun,BAM next thing I know she gets 6 chicks this early spring 3 brown leghorns & 3 New Hampshire reds we think, living in a dog crate in my kitchen, that was fun raising them was also,as they got older & bigger we would move them outside for the day in a portable dog run moving it around every day & keeping it covered waiting for me to build a coop.I converted the open bottom of our children's unused sky fort play gem slide monstrosity approx. 6" x 5" with a 6" x 8" fenced in run, that took most of the summer to finish, had there living quarters done first It was getting harder & harder to squeeze them into the pet carrying cage & dog crate. We where going away for labor day weekend & had to get er done cause the kids wouldn't have been up to the chore of moving them out & in for the day,we let them free range for the summer until the run was finely done around memorial day, they dident like the new arrangement too much but too bad that's life as a chicken,I let them escape @ the end of each day for an hour or so,all is fine now except for the fact its been in the teens the past few days & I cant stop worrying about them through the night though its not the first cold spell we have been through.

Till next time Mike

Hi, Mike and welcome to BYC - thanks for joining us and congrats on getting the coop and run sorted. If you search for "winterising your coop" you should get some good pointers - if you are happy, then don't sweat it, chickens are tough little blighters.

Best wishes

Welcome!

Thanks for sharing, great introduction!

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun. Unlike non chicken loving friends, family and colleagues, BYC’ers never tire of stories or pictures that feature our feathered and non feathered friends
