Hi everyone,
This site came so highly recommended, I look forward to learning a lot.
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Haha. I am so new to chickens that I just got my first batch today--with more to come tomorrow.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?/(3) What breeds do you have?
4--2 Barred Rock, 2 Aracauna hybrids; I have 6 Buff Orpingtons and 6 Australorpes coming tomorrow. I picked these breeds for their friendliness and appearance, mostly (I think these breeds are pretty). We're just having eggs for fun and to share with friends and family.
(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com? Recommendations of friends plus the Internet.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies? I do medieval re-enactment, gardening, a little photography, and a lot of fiber arts.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. I'm a college history professor at a small college in east Georgia (US), and my DH is a quail biologist. We have 4 dogs and live on 12 acres in a very rural area (EVERYONE around here has chickens, dogs, cats, goats, llamas, you name it, all kinds of animals). We are trying to be a little more self sufficient--baking our own bread, getting an apiary going in spring, and having our own eggs. We also have a small garden (very small) every year--just peppers, tomatoes, and herbs. My son is 8, and he has been so responsible helping care for the dogs, we decided this was a good time to try chickens.
I have loads of questions, so I'm going to look around the forums for answers. Thanks!
Dee, Waynesboro GA
