Hi everyone, my name is Rachel. I'm brand new here so just wanted to say hi. I'm very new to the wonderful world of chickens so looking forward to learning much more from you all, and hearing about your beautiful chickens too.
I have 3 lovely silkies - I started with two, and purchased them from a farm, however one of them was sick with a viral infection and would have been unwell before I received her, so she didn't live for very long, which was really upsetting as I fell immediately in love with my girls - and it highlighted to me how much I have to learn about them. I did grow up with chickens in our backyard as a child, but that was quite some time ago, so I would say I'm very new to all of this.
So I have two new girls, and one of my originals and they're doing really well, but not laying yet. They're slowly getting used to me and not seeing me as threatening, but I'm yet to be able to reach out and touch them without them getting jumpy.
My partner has just moved in with me and thinks it's hilarious how much I adore my chickens and dote on them - he doesn't really get it, but he does like them, more than he lets on!
I saw backyard chickens.com on Facebook, as one of my friends tagged me in a post they saw, as they all know I'm mad about my chickens and tease me about it regularly (which I quite enjoy honestly).
I'm 31, I'm in Tasmania, Australia and really happy to meet anyone, so feel free to say hi and throw any information or advise my way at any time. I'm very eager to know as much as I can, so that I can continue to have healthy happy girls.
    Thanks for reading. :)

Hi Rachel and a warm welcome to BYC [IMG]You seem to have well and truly got the chicken bug so you are in the right place to talk all things chicken. The Learning Centre is a good place to start, but don't be shy in asking any questions you may have - we all help each other here!

Go check out the Australia thread. I think there may be a few.

I also love the silkies. That baby in my Avatar is one I hatched. She has gotten big now. Pretty girl.

Howdy palmspringspxu and Welcome to BYC!

I was the one who desperately wanted chickens in our house and now hubby, who was not really fussed at the time, loves them as much as I do [IMG]

As suggested, you might want to pop in to ‘australia-six-states-and-that-funny-little-island’ and say G’Day:

PS. I note that you live on that funny little island and would like to point out that I did not name the thread [IMG]

Welcome to Backyard Chickens Rachel, I was certain I had already answered you but, probably forgot to hit "submit" - it wouldn't be the first time. I did mention the Aussie thread and suggested you see if you can find some better silkie breeder who would not sell you a sick bird. So sorry you lost her.

I think in Australia and elsewhere the silkies are full size in US we only have the bantams. I'm sure either size has the silkie "broodiness" bred into them. They can make the very best mothers.
