i stupidly left 1 of my hens with a newborn chick in the chicken coop. ( in a cat box away from other hens) but they could still get to her and this morning found chick had been pulled out from mum and looked lifeless. Amazingly it was still breathing. Have held it ever since,( around 3/4 hours) propping it’s head up and feeding drops of sugar water . Again amazingly it’s still alive and drinking. My hands got very sweaty will this cause a problem?! Is this futile or is there hope? Also how long do I do this as I have 3 Kids a home as summer hols her in uk! Thanks Natalie
I blame myself as I was busy and meant to move the hen out of danger ( her box was accessible to other hens) so the perfectly well baby was attacked by the others . I’m so stupid! The hen in question is now sharing 3 chicks with 2 Pekins ! The Pekins seem a bit useless and don’t seem to be showing chicks what to do ( just sitting and not moving about) they are young . Chickpea the serama is doing the work of showing them how to peck etc! They seem quite happy together but feel bad as she was only hatching 1 egg . ( There was a staggered hatch) 5 hatched in first 2 days so hen is looking after them and then I gave 5 eggs between 3 Broodys! All hatched a couple of days later except one egg. So 8 are doing well . Such a shame I mucked up. Do you think I should take chick to Vets’s to euthanise?
