Please Help!! I am new to chickens and have a 2 1/2 week old Buff Orpington who I noticed the other chicks picking on just a little while ago. I noticed blood on 1 of the other chicks beaks, so I started the process of determining who it was coming from. I found her..and she doesn't have active wipe off blood coming off her bottom, but it's puffed out and obviously there is some blood there somewhere. After wiping her bottom some with a warm wet towel, I have separated her from the others, in a make shift box with light and food and the same pine bedding as she was in. She seems pretty stressed out, chirping louder then normal but she has recently pooped and it looks normal.
Is this the right thing to do with her?? Is there anything else I should be doing or can do? I know if I put her back in with the others she will be less stressed out, but I don't want them picking on her and causing more harm.... is this possible?? Should she stay separate? How long??

Any help anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated!!!

Yikes!! I don't have much experience with something like this but I'm sure you'll get lots of answers. I would think she'll recover fine if you keep it clean (maybe put some neosporin on it to prevent infection). She probably doesn't like being alone, but if there's a wound the other chicks will want to keep picking on her, so you need to keep her separate till she heals some. Maybe you could put some sort of barrier up so she can be "with" them but protected? Better to be lonely for a while than get picked on any more. Poor little kid - what a way to start off - getting pecked in the butt!!
p.s. as I understand it the red color of the wound is what attracts the attention of the other little peckers, so once her bum is "normal" looking she should be safe, although you'd want to keep an eye on her when you put her back in with the others to make sure she doesn't get picked on again . . .

I know, right!!! I felt so bad for her. She seems to have quieted down some now {everyone has!!} .. She has eaten and is laying down. I unfortunately don't have a way for her to see the others and be separate from them.. = (

Of course now she is making a liar out of me and chirping at me trying to get my attention! I know she's lonely, and I worried she's going to be too stressed out and I'm going to lose her. I guess though I would rather her be stressed and not make it, then having the other peck her to death. = (

Could you put her in with the others but use a piece of window screen, or wire shelving, or a wire cookie-cooling rack, to make a temporary barrier? Look around your house and see if there's something you can use for the next day or two. I know it's hard to listen to the pathetic cheeping, but it's got to be better than finding her dead at the hands of the other little hooligans. Well, I know they don't have hands, but you know what I mean . . .
