I initially thought I had two male/3female, and them 3male/2 female. Now I’m leaning toward just one female. I don’t know! I can’t get foam out of anyone and probably am not doing it correctly. I don’t want to hurt them. Three of them are about 6 weeks and the other two brown ones are 4 weeks old.
6 week old “Sonic.” All white except for the light grey on the back.
Brother Leo (6weeks)…white with a black back.
Sister Speckles. She’s white-ish with black speckles everywhere. Her head looks black with white dots.
when they were younger, she was always the plumpest of the trio. Very sweet…if you have treats for her.
And my 4 weekers- Hawk looked all black at birth, and now dark grey with white specs and rust colored feathers under the tail and around the vent. They don’t appear anywhere else.
And Pepe… brown all over with a lined bib (?) and rusty nether feathers.
So what do y’all think? Is Speckles the only female, or are none of them female? They are still in a brooder box. I’m waiting on a bigger indoor enclosure as it’s about to get cold outside. If I need to separate the males, I may need to buy more than one or get clever somehow. So far, there’s been no fighting or evidence of fighting. They all do everything together… sleep in a pile under a heating plate, eat together, drink together, pile in the dust bath together (or try to). When I remove speckles to hold (she’s the most tame, and my fave birdie), the others stand tall at the plexiglass, cheep and whistle, and Sonic and Leo will pace until she’s returned.
Other than that, I clean the box and change the bedding and liners daily (if not twice), throw out the previous days’ food and water, wash and dry the dishes, put in fresh food and fresh water. They eat chick grit starter in one bowl, a mix of seeds, nuts and fruits in another bowl (made for parakeets, but was told it was ok for buttons), as well as a little pile of dried meal worms—they go nuts for those! If a turd gets in the water, I empty and refill, and clean out poo throughout the day. I’m not sure if they want/need this level of cleaning, but omg they poop a LOT!!!! lol.
I’m a newbie, so if I’m doing anything wrong let me know…and please help me with the genders!
