help a bird flew into my door!!**update: everything is ok now**

I was sitting on the sofa and all of the sudden I heard something that sounded like a knock at the door (on my storm door) and when I opened the door there was a bird laying on the porch on it's side. still breathing and looking a little dazed I would think. anyways I waited to go outside to see if maybe it just needed to regroup before flying back off, but that was 15 minutes ago and it has yet to fly off!! I did moved it a little to try and get it to fly on it's own but no luck

**I just checked on it again (had to move my cat away from the door because she was "watching" it) and it has it's head tucked back, and seems to need to take a nap. it is breathing but not moving other than that.

what should I do?? it's so cold outside and there really isn't protection from other cats, when it's just sitting on the porch. also, what kind of bird is it?

Not sure about what to do but I would move it to a cage so none eats it...and see if it regroups...did it break its neck?

Look up a wildlife rehab group in your area.

i just checked on it again and it is hopping around the porch and then to the edge but doesn't take flight. it's chirping and hopping and pooped. so I think it needed to regroup, I'm sure the thing was seeing stars after it hit the door.

my only injury suspicion would be wing. if flickers it's wings but never flies.

I've had that happen here too, in spite of putting large owl cut-outs on my picture windows to discourage bird collisions. Sometimes they are just dazed and after they rest a while, they can fly off. If it hasn't recovered in a short while, maybe you could bring it into a garage or barn and give it some heat (heating pad or hot water bottle wrapped in a towel).

It may have internal injuries from the impact and will die anyway, no matter what you do. Good luck with it.

great news! it flew away! I think it just needed a rest like y'all said. thank goodness, because we have wondering cats outside and that would be a horrible site to see on my own porch (my cat stays inside btw). thanks for all the help! will change the title of the thread now.

Hi,
We're birders in addition to chicken people! I'm glad to hear your bird is better. In the future, when a bird collides with a window or if you find one outside and it's still breathing, you can put it in a box with holes in it, put it someplace quiet and dark, and let it rest a little while. Sometimes it is just stunned and needs to rest a while. After an hour or so, take the box outside and open it. If all that was wrong was that it was stunned, it will fly away. Sometimes you just need to get them up and safe (away from cats and predators) and let them rest.
