Help! A dog attacked my hen!

Hopefully, the green is a bruise. Someone last week had a green bruise on some wounded tissue that looked similar. Smell for any bad odors, any swollen soft mushy areas, or pus that would indicate a wound infection.

A bruise would be good--it will fade in time, but if it is not a bruise, I would hope it's not some sign of infection. I think you are doing all you can, so I'm hoping it changes color and fades to yellow just likke bruises do.

It's hard to tell from the pictures. Is the green color on the surface or does it look like it is under the skin? I had a hen get some nasty wounds from a dog back in Feb. Be sure to do diluted iodine every day. I also coverd Lucy's wounds with triple antibiotic ointment after cleansing. I too had to stitch her, I'm no expert but here's my thread if you wanna take a look https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/854332/dog-attacked-my-lucy

If it's a bruise then it'll go away. If it's gangrene...you may need to do something more drastic. I don't know what that is (I've never been in your situation) but I would assume a small incision over the green is needed, with some cleaning out the infected area & ointment applied. Watch to see if the green gets bigger, softer or just 'odd'.

Also, holy heck, you sewed your chicken together. Congrats! I must ask you how you managed that without fainting or losing your lunch. Seriously, just seeing the pics made me queasy.

Looks like bruising to me,you will know in a couple of days as bruise will start to change color. Make sure you are cleaning sutures.

For future reference, nylon fishing line is great for suturing wounds and less likely to promote infections.
