Help a newbie

Living just North of Dallas, we have 24 hens and a wonderful Roo named Joe. We have RIR, Barred Rocks, Buffs, Red Sex Links and Americanna's. The RIR are very gentle and two of them come running to the gate when I go out to give them snacks in the mid morning. You should check with North Haven Gardens and check the Dallas Morning news for a past of issue about raising chickens. North Haven has been having Saturday Morning guest speakers on raising chickens and even some sales from area breeders.

Enjoy!! That first blue/green egg is very exciting!! Oh and

From WI. Most of the heavier/dual pupose breeds are pretty calm. My Salmon Faverolle is quiet and friendly, 2 of my 3 Wyandottes are very friendly, the other one is shy but quiet and my EE is getting friendlier as she gets close to 6 month old. Barred Rocks, RIR, sexlinks and Orps are all supposed to be friendly and calm. Check Hendersons chicken chart, BYC breed chart, Feathersite for breed info. Chickens all have individual personalities of course but the info gives you a good idea of their general disposition, cold/heat tolerance (heat often mor of a problem than cold...30 is not an issue for most), egglaying, broodiness etc. Good luck

If you want to pm me I have found the card of the gentleman that raises chickens for sale and also is a guest speaker at North Haven and The City of Dallas. He was a wonderful source of information and when we visited his farm we had a very wonderful and fruitful time. He is a great source for our area!!!
