I don't know what to do! When going into the coop on Friday evening, my husband followed me in and did not shut the door, and you guessed it, one of my beautiful golden males flew outside.

He is still outside! This afternoon I saw him, he had flown back near where his buddies are (where he is supposed to be) so we thought we would wait him out and at dusk when he would be trying to roost and not real awake, we would nab him and put him back.

Well, he hung out there on the swing by the coop for a few hours but when dusk came, he was not around. I suspect that something (like the silly pup in the pen next to him) probably spooked him off. We looked for him around the trees that are behind the pen but never saw him.
Do you think that he will hang around for a few days, maybe that we can catch him tomorrow evening? If so, what is the best way to approach him? I don't have a net and I don't want to hurt him. I think he just wishes he was back with his little clan, there are several females in there to draw his attention. What should we do? I am afraid that if he is in the wild for too long, a predator of some sort will get him; he is very bright yellow and white in color.

I have one that has been out for 3 years and absolutely a treat. At this point we could easily capture him as he follows us around, but its just fun having him. The only negative is he harasses my penned up birds something fierce in breeding season, but in some ways thats good too. He will return. They almost always do, or at least a large percentage of them. Invest in a big salmon net and put your stalking skills to the test. If you have a corner thats the best. They will do the pheasant pace on the fence and won't fly usually until you are right on top. You have one chance. or enjoy him on the outside. You'll find he stays even more colorful than the penned ones. Not sure if its the bug diet, or the outside ones stay in the shade more, but their color is massively intensified.

I had the same problem I made one of these traps and bated it with dried cranberries and in one day he was back.

I raised goldens for about 4 years and had about 5 get out and got back everyone. The way I did it was put the birds in the pen into a smaller pen inside the main pen and opened the main door. He will go right in! Shut the door and there you go. Thats what I always did.

Ryan!

Thanks everyone!

Earlier this week my husband managed to walk up and get him, and it was in the middle of the day! The pheasant had been hanging around the pen, wishing he was still in the pen with his buddies for nearly a week, but now he is back, safe and sound!
