Help/ Advice with ducks that just randomly showed up

I want you to know that I have shared your story with my very few neighbors and they always ask about your son and Chuck and Buck. So funny

If I get to go back to CA and I am anywhere remotely near you I have got to meet them! They are special and yeah I guess that kid is alright too, huh? You have an amazing family!

Thank you for All of your help! We have an old dog kennel that we could put them in for now. I didnt know if that would work it has concrete floors, and an open top but I guess we can start there until we have a better plan.

Get some netting or hardware cloth to put over the top and start working your way down the sides with some more. At least you wont' need to worry about the floor since it's concrete. If it's big enough maybe get some pallets and build them a simple shelter for now within it where they can snuggle down is hay or straw and sleep and you won't have to worry about predators getting them.

Can you post a picture of your kennel? This is what I recently made in my run for some of my ducks just to give them shelter from the rain, wind and sun during the day and they love it. It cost me nothing and took no time at all to make. The hardest part was lifting up the pallett for the top by myself!

Please understand my picture is not of something that is even remotely safe for a night time predator proof pen for them. I was just thinking of something you could build quickly for a temorpary shelter inside the kennel which will hopefully be predator proof.

Just give them something soft to lay on, my ducks love straw, and they will be happy.
Concrete floor is good: It is easy to clean, ducks are messy creatures…

One more question wannabehillbilly. Will an open top pen with a dog house work for now or does it need to be fully enclosed? Thanks again you've been most helpful!

Thats a great idea with the pallets! I have access to a lot of those. Our kennel looks like this but on a concrete slab.

It all depends on what kind of predators you have in your area: If the dog house will protect them from the local bad guys over night (worst are raccoons!) and you have no areal predators (birds of prey) the dog house would be enough and you can let them roam free on your property during the day.
I have a luxurious two bedroom apartment for my ducks for the night that will keep the 'coons at bey and during the day the can run freely around my house. I have areal predators, but they are being kept busy by the local crows (who receive cracked corn as payment). I have lost one duck to a raccoon because i was late home and my drake Donald disappeared in broad daylight two days after my wife spotted two coyotes.
Of course if you live in a predator infested area like @Magnolia Ducks you would have to build a duck-bunker and keep them protected day and night.
It all depends on your area…

if you can get something to cover the top so things can't climb over and hawks and owls can't fly in for dinner that would be a great start! The only thing I'd worry about is weasels or minks getting in and they can through the chain link. They are viscious little things that seem to just love to kill. Hardware cloth will keep them out. Hey, if you know anyone that has taken off a tin roof and still has the material you could put that over the top too or something like that. Just thinking here trying to come up with something. You could even lay some boards across the top and then lay down some fencing or something over them.
