Please help!! We have four pullets all born around the same time last July, and all raised together in my daughter's house. Then, three blocks to grandma's house and new coop. Each of a different breed. Speckled Sussex, Cuckoo Maran, Buff Orpington, and Sicilian Buttercup. Buttercup has not laid an egg 5-6 days! They all began laying and continually since January. Buttercup was last to begin. Her eggs are not as small as you'd think, longish and conical and white. Last Friday, 03/31/13-all were singing screaming normally and Saturday too. Sunday when feeding them and collecting eggs, Buttercup was on nest so I waited. She never got off. Daughter told me Buttercup's tail was crooked Friday, I didn't notice that. Some eggs have recently had a tad of yolk coloring here and there but no where else and no shell bits. By Monday I could tell Buttercup's tail was held low and to the side. By yesterday, that side of her body appeared swollen. Yesterday and today the girls are not making their normal noises, fewer eggs and Buttercup seems depressed, they all are, but she seems forlorn. There is a hardness to one side of her body, kinda high up. A friend knew someone whose hen had an impacted egg. Had to manually pull it out. I wonder about massage. There's no heat, like a hot area, and no apparent sign of injury. Did see Buffy peck her on the back. Up until now the healthiest, sweetest most productive chickens ever. Wonderful birds. On an excellent diet. Only change is that we let them at the rest of the side yard to garden for us but had not removed all poisonous plants-most but not oxalis. Still a few callas which they love and we try to remove or wire off. Something is really wrong with Buttercup and I have no money and I don't know what to do. My urge is to massage her (she'd hate that), but not sure I should. Any clues? The other girls look healthy but sad. They are making eggs but not as many. Please help. I love these birds so much. Buttercup is so special. She seems to be suffering, or concerned about herself. Thank you. Grandma

Buttercup is most likely eggbound. You should put her in warm water with her head out and the rest of her body in, and let her sit like that (make sure you watch her though) for 15-20 minutes. See if she'll take yoghurt, egg, and milk, and also give her water in a syringe. Hope that helps!
