We just got our first flock of chickens and I need some help determining this ones gender. We got them straight run from a local breeder. We mainly wanted hens and 1 rooster but we knew we could end up with more than one. After the lady checked their goods she said they appeared to be all hens except for a black one we chose which sounded ideal HOWEVER we got a pair of Orpington brothers who are about 1-1 1/2 years old yesterday (free ranging) and this morning I heard crowing from what sounded like a rooster with a sore throat! LOL turns out it was coming from the coop and from what we thought was a hen! Ive always thought she looked more like a rooster but what do I know??? I'm new to this! Hahaha --- With that said what do you think??? They are only a few months old and I have heard hens can in fact crow so I didn't know if the new roosters enticed her to speak up and claim ownership OR if she is in fact a HE and well boys will be boys!
