They are about 5 weeks old. We hatched them and one has a funny neck deformity thing going on. That is the one that isn't showing very well beside the white one. Can anyone tell me what breed they look like and if you can tell male or female. I heard one of them making a pop-a-right, pop-a-right sound last night. What's that all about?

They are COTURNIX.Just 3 different COLORS . The white 1 is ...a white. The 1 beside the white is a Range. The 3rd 1 looks like "wild type" / Brown...maybe a hen. The other 2 you cannot "feather sex", only vent sex or "beer sex" as in sit and watch till someone crows ,then QUICK grab a ziptie and "band " it cuz that'll be the rooster. You definitely have at least 1 Roo..."Pop-a-right" huh? mine always say "Look at me !Look at me!" or "i'm a BRAT!" (when they crow.) LOL
you want to have bare minimum of 3 hens for every rooster. Roosters are very hard on hens unless you have at least 3 but 5-6 is MUCH better ratio .

The last photo looks female, she is a Japanese quail, the white is either a texas a&m or english can't see the other very well bar the missing head feathers maybe a rosetta or range? you def have a male in the mix as the strange sound you are hearing is his crow this is why one is missing the head feathers as they are being pulled out by the male as he mounts her/him, they are just reaching maturity now hence the crowing, you should get some eggs soon too, watch them closely, behaviour will tell you who is male/female I find if you seperate each one so they can't see each other the female will make a quiet chirrup chirrup call like a cricket to establish contact and the male will make a harsh pop a right!

Ok well at least now I know that I have one rooster and probably two hens. I notice the white one after the one you guys say is Range in color alot. The one you called brown or japanese is usually off by itself doing it own thing and they other two seem to stick together closer. I didn't peek in and see which one was making the pop a right sound last night but now I wish I had. I have more quail eggs on their way now for hatching. They should be here soon and I will start to incubate them to add more in for the other three. I can't wait!

Japanese quail is another name for COTURNIX( Coturnix being the proper species' name )...not a color. There are NO MORE Texas A&M Coturnix as far as the authorities are aware of ...They are just bigger English White Coturnix.
Coturnix are alot of fun and etc .
You need to do your research and learn all you can about them so you can properly meet their needs.
Read through the posts and stickies here on BYC and ALSO go to Stellargamebird.com and read up on her information.

i agree atleast 5 hens minium

The colors of the first 2 are White and Rosetta. Both are Japanese Coturnix. The last is also a coturnix, she (definitely a girl) is a cinnamon (fawn, roux, or whatever they are calling it these days), not a brown.

ETA: You should have at least 3 hens per male, 5 is the suggested maximum.
