Posting pics will help you get the layout of our coop and run (below). Somehow they get out there (up the ramp to the loft and down a long ramp into the run). But 3 of 4 are chirping madly while mamma Charlie keeps pacing and going from run into coop and back again. One chick, who was in the run earlier tode it back into the coop. So they can see each other but are not taking the next big step. Last night I chased them down in the run and then went around front and put them in the coop, one by one. Don’t really want a repeat of that!!! Suggestions? They are only about 2 1/2 weeks old and haven’t free ranged out of the coop yet.

:idunno Leave em be. As long as they have food and water down in the run, and the run is secure from predators, they should be fine. Gotta crawl before ya walk, and walk before ya run. They're gonna keep doing this unless you physically blockade them from doing so. They'll figure it out (eventually).

LOL. They didn't have food or water out in the run, but I brought them out a one gallon waterer, and they just about drained it, with the help of some of our grown hens. Brought them out some more water. :jumpy I will go out directly and give them some food out there, too. Thanks for the tip!

TheGirlOverThere: That's basically what I was planning to do when it gets closer to dusk. The big girls will be back in the coop for the night, and the little ones will either figure it out, or I'll catch them and put them in the coop myself!

UPDATE ~~ I ended up going back to the coop soon after reading the replies. At that time, 3 of the chicks were back in the coop, but there was one nervous chick still out in the run without her sibs or her mama. I decided to catch her and put her onto the loft from the run, and she flew down to the coop floor herself. I went out to check again just before dark, and they were all snugly huddled under mama. You can see one under mom peaking out.
Thanks again for your help. BTW, it is SO MUCH EASIER letting our broody Australorp raise the babies. The other 12 hens don’t bother them at all, and Charlie is very protective of them!
