I have 20 chickens that are a week old with a variety of different breeds. I have 2 polish crested and the other chicks keeping pecking at one of the little chicks top hat. It is pretty bad what do I do??

Sounds like an overheating or overcrowding situation. You need to remove that bird that's being picked on

Do I completely seperate or do I give him one little buddy. Seems when I seperate him he just sits and chirps.

Thanks for the information.

Get some Vaseline or other similar type thick goo and daub it on his head thickly. You may have to repeat this every couple of days, but after a while they'll get tired of cleaning it off their beaks.

Polish will get picked on more than the others if in a mixed flock. That one is probably at the bottom of the pecking order. You need to seperate and I hate to say it but you may not be able to put it back with that group.

Take both of the polish out (for company) and keep and eye on the other one - hopefully the other one will not pick at its friend. Treat and once totally healed you can try to put back but probably will not work..put them next to the other group so they can see each other - good luck.

Hey that's a good idea!

Is it just one bully...or just a few bullies...I would seperate the bullies. If they are all picking on the one little chick then I guess you have to seperate that chick but try to see if you can identify one that is less aggressive to be a buddy. They could outgrow it...I had a cuckoo maran boy..I kew he was a boy since day one...he was just a stinker!!!

Anyway...he would NOT stop pecking my other little cuckoo girl...her beak got bloody from it...then the others started to do the same to her b/c there was a "spot" on her beak! (I knew she was a girl b/c she was too sweet and tolerated his non-sense:gig)...JUST JOKING GUYS!!!

Anyway, I put his mean little heiny in with my silkie babies who were 2 weeks old and suddenly he was low man on the pole and whadaya know...he got some manners!!!

After another week both groups of babies lived happily together and I moved them to a big brooder and the problem resolved itself!

My point is that you may NOT have to seperate "her"..I'll just call her a girl since she's a sweetie pie like my little cuckoo girl was!....forever...it could just be a very short term thing.
