I
have a light Brahma baby that’s about 3 days old. Yesterday her eye was crusted shut and I put warm water on it and it opened right up. I can see that there’s a little bit of a red spot on the “waterline” of her eye. I feel like either she was pecked and it’s irritated/scratched or she scratched it too hard with her foot. She’s in the brooder with 7 others. When she closes her eye for a while, it will stay closed even when she wakes up. She’s also slept for about an hour and a half continuously since I’ve separated her from the rest to let her eye heal. I don’t know if that’s normal when they are unbothered by siblings or if she is sick. I read to put neosporin on it with a qtip (the non medicated kind) and let it heal. But I’m worried about her sleeping so much. She is such a calm little one. Her other eye is fine, she is breathing fine and eating/drinking normally. I’m a pretty new chicken mom and very tender hearted when it comes to my birds. Can anybody give me any more advice? Has anyone had this issue? What can I expect for an outcome? I’ll attach pictures.

I am so sorry you are experiencing this problem, I wish I could help but I have not experienced this before. I think you are on the right track, I like the idea of warm water to open the eye back up and keeping her seperated at this point.
Hopefully someone can chime in that has experience with eye problems in chicks.

Thank you! Trying my best

We rescued a chick that had been pecked by it's Momma or siblings from another lady. Her eye looked so painful. The eyelid was torn and swollen and part of her comb was pecked. We kept her in our brooder and watched to make sure no one bullied her. She is now 8 weeks old and her eye will never be perfectly round but healed perfectly by itself.
