Help... baby chicks are dying

I put my hand over their back, with my fingertips toward the tail and my wrist near the heaf, then grasp them gently and turn them over, with their butt towards you. Don't put them upside down too long.

how do you hold them without hurting them so you can clean their butts
Gently. Hold it in one hand without squeezing it. You'll figure it out. And then do this:
If it's vent is caked with chalky white urates it becomes constipated and backed up and this will kill it quite quickly. Soaking in warm water and gently rubbing (sometimes a moistened cotton bud or Q-Tip is useful) to dissolve and tease out any obstruction is the course of action for this and then coating the vent in ointment to prevent further caking and ensuring that the chick gets plenty of fluids.
I would only do this if they do have poop stuck to them, though.

what is pasty butt and how do i check for it
Pasty butt is when their vent get blocked by poop and they can't go. It will kill them pretty quickly. Use a cotton ball and water or baby oil to gently clean away stuck poop from the vent. Don't pull it, you can rip the skin

Sorry I didn't see the earlier replies... Small phone screen...

Pics of the brooder setup please. The first few could have been shipping stress, but the more recent deaths could be something else. You mention several heat options. Heat is important, but equally important is that you only want one small area of the brooder heated. The rest of the brooder needs to be about room temp, so the chicks can cool off when needed. Overheating kills.
