I have recently purchased 1 rhode island red& 2 barred rocks. They are10 days old and have gone bald on thier tummies, but fine this am. Is this something like mites? I had them in a small box, heat lamp that I move around n plenty of water n food. I moved them to my lg plastic pool n changed bedding. They now have tons of space. Will they get thier down back??

! Great to have you here. If your chicks seem otherwise healthy I would assume they are okay. Are they in clean litter? It can become matted and pull of their down. You might post your concern in the link below. Good luck to you!

Ty for responding so soon. I have 3 3 mo old golden buffs and this didn't happen with them but I put them straight into the plastic pool ( I started w/ 5 but lost 2 to weasels). So I'm hoping maybe the box they were in was just small n not clean enuff. This morning everyone was fine but I'm a new chicken enthusiast so I'll keep posting here... Lots of great info! Ty!:)

Chicks do molt when they lose their down and grow feathers, but to go bald like that is unusual. It may be mites too... I agree with Redsoxs though. Post in the section he linked for you and good luck!

I checked them today and they do seem more comfy, I moved the heat a lil further away but still found one sitting on her water so I inched the pool a bit farther away. I'm crossing my fingers n I gave them ea a meal worm just for a lil extra protien.

I have never ever seen mites on chicks. I just assumed mites did not like chick down. Has anyone ever had chicks with mites, just wondering.
