yes i know she has an injury, half of them do or did, lost a bit so much attacking, ugh, but now i have a concern about red bare butts, i don't see lice, but what is this? mites? there feet seem fine, they have pink skin and then some very red skin, thought it is not hot to the touch

I would check them for mites first of all- they tend to stick around the vent area. Do your chickens have runny poo? If they have Cocci, or another disease that would cause runny poo- this could also be a cause of vent area feather loss. If they have sores, chances are that the other chickens are picking at the scabs, creating some irritation and feather loss along the way.

I have six chickens. One of them has a bare butt area that is bright red. I never see the other five picking on her and there are no feathers in the laying boxes. They eat chicken scratch and chicken crumble. The coop is clean. They don't appear to have diarrhea and this particular chickens butt is clean, it just looks so sore. A large area about 3 to four inch circle. Is this mites?

My poor chickens have the same issue!! It started with feather loss right above the tail feathers, and now three of them have no feathers around their vent and there are VERY red areas! I asked the vet and they mentioned mites so I sprayed and powdered, cleaned their coop constantly and even changed their food and this doesnt seem to be helping. There was a suggestion that they might need more protein so I have been trying to supply them with some. I would love an explanation and will keep an eye on your thread. I dont want anything to happen to them and I cant imagine they are very happy! :-(

Red butts can be caused by many things. Your vet suggested mites, they require 2-4 treatments to rid the coop and birds of them. The mites like to hide in the cracks on wood so it is important to get the sevin dust in there. Each treatment needs to be 7 days apart as the dust doesn't work on the eggs. If it is not mites the other things to look for are a really bad smell, the effected area feels like a water balloon or air sack, or you can feel an egg.

I found this thread looking for a reason why my rooster has a red butt feather loss, I dont see mites, so did anyone on here find out why there butts were red and sore looking???

Does it smell, feel like a air or water sack, or is it swollen? Are you sure not mites? They hide in the day in the wood cracks, best to look at night near the vent with a flashlight.
