I was out in the front yard when i looked to my coop and saw a big chestnut colored cat was walking around the perimeter of my coop. 2 1/2 - 3 feet from head to tail. it does not look like a bob cat because it has no spots. i saw it later on in the evening and shot at it (missed on purpose) i got scared but came back around 8. What type of cat is thi and how do i stop it without killing it?

Is it bigger than bobcat? Sounds like cougar, puma, mountain lion, or cataman. All the same cat of course, just different names. If that is what it is call the department of natural resources. I would take pictures for proof if you can get em. Sometimes, at least here, they like to deny their existence.

What kind of big cats do you have in your location? Here in Kansas, Bobcats are everywhere but their has been a few reports of Mountain Lions here and there, mostly along our borders with Colorado and Nebraska.

Usually if it is a hybrid it would be a mix of housecat and bobcat. Do you have a livetrap big enough? If not I say shoot it. If it happens to be a pure breed bobcat bothering chickens or any other livestock in my eyes and our DNR here justifies shooting.
